Facilitating Self-regulated learning practices
with Ed Tech!
This project aims to deliver theory based user friendly solutions for online, hybrid and blended learning that teachers and students can use in their everyday school to make digitally enhanced Self Regulated Learning (SRL) more efficient and enjoyable.
This will be done by a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach aiming for an effective systemic impact in primary and lower secondary education.
Objectives & Outputs
The practice framework consists of a position paper and visuals that explain the why, what and how of our project. The output aims to gather, (1) knowledge of the key factors in our project; technology-enhanced learning, online learning formats and SRL promotion, (2) the knowledge and some specific results from the previous projects tMAIL and SLIDEshow focusing on bringing SRL into the classroom, (3) new knowledge of research regarding COVID-19 and education and (4) a practice framework called The LearningM!X, that allows teams to set up digital learning flows supporting SRL, independent from a specific LMS-platforms. This paper targets teachers, other educational stakeholders and educational researchers.
O2- O3 - Training & Library of Patterns
One of the goals of the INSTALL-ed project is to develop a library of patterns, which would be supporting teachers to understand how to use digital technologies to foster the development of students’ self-regulated learning skills.
We will also test drive an international teacher training with practical examples on digital 'HOW TO IMPLEMENT SELF- REGULATED LEARNING (SRL) DIGITALLY?'.
This course will guide you into the themes of self-regulated learning and its main challenges for learners in a classroom and provide you with practical skills to support your students in the technology-amplified classroom. You will get a chance to meet colleagues from Ireland, Estonia and Belgium, share your practice with them and learn new perspectives!

O4- User Stories for EdTech
Digital tools can be used for SRL-objectives both situationally (exercises, occasional tools, prompts) and systematically (dashboards learning statuses students learning preferences). In that manner, we could speak of digital SRL-tools and SRL-management. Therefore, a concept "The Learning M!X", was created and validated in 8 pilot schools through a systematic approach to Self-Regulated Learning in regards to class managements.
But also this concept creates a R&D framework for SRL towards EdTech in 9 generic Design principles. From that 10 user stories make concrete examples that could inspire EdTech to create SRL-facilitating features that empower the learning context (teachers & students) in organising SRL for there classes. This output is based on collaboration with 8 pilot schools and 4 Ed-Tech companies in co-creation with schools.
O5- Policy advice
The existing ed tech infrastructure grew from an educational paradigm in which SRL had no place yet. Even educational digital content is not immediately marketed with SRL in mind. Nor have existing structures and policies grown from an SRL perspective. This makes working on SRL, let alone - systematically addressing SRL learning environments - a gigantic challenge. This project seeks to identify a number of structural challenges and concerns, as well as opportunities that can enable a transition towards more SRL.
Teachers and schools are confronted with an abundance of challenges, changes and innovation projects that quickly follow each other, especially during the pandemic teachers were and are challenged on multiple fronts (such as teaching digitally, supporting their students from a distance,...). Teachers are expected to switch to digital/online/hybrid classroom practices but are often not prepared for this switch.
Additionally, students’ self-regulated learning skills are important during times of distant learning. With this framework we want to connect these important aspects that arise in the current hybrid/online/blended education settings in which teachers are located. Can we find opportunity in solving teachers problems from an SRL-perspective?
The training aims to enhance teachers capacity to analyze how they currently support SRL skills; train teachers how to analyze their digital practices and learn them to identify their struggles concerning the use of digital tools and promoting SRL; show them whether and how digital tools may help them; train teachers to use the patterns and consequently use the tools and platforms in such a way that it supports students’ learning. Specifically, teachers and other educational stakeholders (such as school principles, ICT coordinators) are targeted.
A central aim to the INSTALL-ed project is to create an answer to the question: What can teachers do to support specific aspects of SRL with tool X,Y, ...?. This is done by providing various templates of already tested prompts and scripts for SRL that can be adapted for various educational settings. Next to these patterns, practical examples for teachers are paramount, showing them how to use digital tools/platforms, what they can do with it, to ultimately show how they can support their students’ SRL development.
Output 4 will design user stories and design principles which edtech companies could use in designing future (SRL-proof) tools and platforms. Specifically, the output aims to increase the knowledge about SRL skills, give insight in ideal teacher and student experiences when using digital solutions to support students’ SRL and offer concrete (plans for) improvements of software in favor of SRL skills. A service-design trajectory will be adopted in order to develop output 4.
For policy makers in particular policy recommendations evidenced from the INSTALL-ed project will be produced in Output 5. Recommendations on local/regional level and on European level will be formulated.
